Origins of BairesDev
SBS – What inspired the founding of BairesDev, and what gap did you see in the market?
Paul – I started BairesDev back in 2009 with Nacho De Marco. As LATAM software engineers, our vision was to bridge the gap between business needs and top tech talent (mostly from LATAM). From the beginning, we understood the importance of talent for this model, so we built a talent-sourcing process based on volume, leveraging automation, escalation, and key skill evaluation.

SBS – How do you ensure the quality of your services, especially when dealing with diverse industries?
Paul – We hire the best people. We receive millions of applications yearly, which enables us to select only the best talent for every client. Our acceptance rate is lower than even the top tech companies in Silicon Valley. We have also built a culture deeply rooted in our commitment to excellence and innovation, so that our services remain at the cutting edge, meeting the evolving demands of different industries.

BairesDev was born remotely in the post-COVID-19 era, and this is especially important as more tech professionals are looking for remote jobs. Through our methodology, we are able to hire top talent from anywhere, which allows people to work from wherever they are. Also, as we hire based entirely on skills and expertise, we can retain top professionals from all over the world while assuring a diverse and inclusive workforce.
As an organization, we leverage AI in many of our HR processes. Recently, we created a machine learning technique that proactively identifies talent attrition risk and allows us to take preventative action. This has led to a more contented and engaged staff, reaching a turnover rate 45% below the industry average. We have also created various upskilling programs, which aim to enhance management skills, leadership talents, and technical proficiency. These investments in talent development improve the skills of our teams while boosting happiness and retention.

SBS – What are some of the key challenges you faced in scaling your business, and how did you overcome them?
Paul – The biggest reason we have sustained an 86% year-over-year average growth rate for four consecutive years is our world-class tech talent. However, one shortcoming we faced and addressed while growing our senior software engineers from 1,000 to 4,000 was our brand’s positioning. Candidates viewed it as too vague and not specific enough.
Many potential candidates still saw us as a scrappy bootstrapped company instead of one of the top software outsourcing companies serving the US. This misperception sometimes discouraged top talent from applying because they didn’t realize the unique opportunities we had to offer. Namely, they’d have the chance to collaborate with world-renowned global brands while working remotely. As a result, many senior devs were unwilling to undergo our rigorous vetting process.
The turning point was when we sharpened our message. We ensured candidates knew what they’d be part of — joining a powerhouse team to shape the future of tech with industry titans. Our clearer communication paid off, catapulting our application rates to more than 1.5 million a year!

SBS – Could you elaborate on your project management methodologies and how they contribute to successful project delivery?
Paul – We employ customized agile project management methodologies to ensure flexibility, client collaboration, and high-quality software. Our approach centers on a few things.
Our foundational approach is agile project management, focusing on iterative development for our teams to adapt to changes swiftly. Regular meetings are pivotal for continuous improvement and aligning with client objectives.
We utilize the Scrum framework for various projects, organizing work into sprints and establishing roles such as Scrum Masters and Product Owners. This structure encourages a team-oriented environment that prioritizes delivering specific features or components quickly, ensuring the end product meets client expectations.
For projects demanding greater flexibility, we apply the Kanban methodology. It enables continuous delivery and allows teams to adjust priorities in real time, effectively managing work in progress based on the project’s changing requirements.
Effective communication and collaboration with clients are central to our methodology. Through regular updates, demos, and feedback sessions, we ensure clients are actively involved in the development process and allow their feedback to shape the project direction.
We incorporate risk management and quality assurance into our methodologies to identify and mitigate potential risks early on. Combined with stringent QA processes, we ensure projects stay on course and adhere to the highest quality standards.
