SBS – What inspired you to start Vintage Vapor Texas?
Justin – I started Vintage Vapor Texas about six months after my mother passed away in 2013. She survived breast cancer but eventually succumbed to bone cancer. Her passing made me reevaluate my life and smoking habits. Vaping was still relatively new and not mainstream, but it allowed me to quit smoking safely and effectively. This inspired me to help others lead healthier lifestyles.

SBS – How has your business evolved since its inception?
Justin – We still use the original processes and structure, but our product mix has evolved significantly and continues to do so.

SBS – What strategies do you use to stay competitive in the vape industry?
Justin – As competition grows, we continually strive to attract new clientele. With a decade of experience, we leverage our longevity and customer reviews to solidify our reputation as a consistent, reputable operation focused on customer service and experience.

SBS – How do you select the brands and products you offer in your store?
Justin – We use several methods to select brands and products, including customer feedback, industry resources, vendor and distributor insights, as well as in-house trials and sampling.

SBS – Can you share more about your “Speakeasy” area and what makes it unique?
Justin – Our “Speakeasy” area focuses on alternative medicinals such as CBD and hemp-based products. We aim to create a unique atmosphere for those interested in these products while ensuring it doesn’t alienate those who aren’t.

SBS – How do you ensure the quality and safety of the products you sell?
Justin – We ensure the quality and safety of our products by sourcing inventory directly from manufacturers or reputable domestic sources. We also educate our customers on best practices and safety.
Overcoming Challenges in the Vape Industry
SBS – What challenges have you faced in the vape industry, and how have you overcome them?
Justin – The vapor industry has faced scrutiny from local, state, and federal entities. It is crucial to stay active in advocating for access to our products on behalf of our customers and business. We inform clients of potential regulatory changes and encourage their involvement. I also serve as chairman of the United States Vaping Association, which seeks legislative and legal relief for our members nationwide. Constant innovation, customer attrition, and increased competition are ongoing challenges, so staying relevant and involved is essential to maintaining customer levels and keeping our inventory dynamic.
Staying Compliant with Regulations
SBS – How do you stay compliant with changing regulations in the vaping and CBD industry?
Justin – Staying compliant is an ongoing part of the business. We stay informed through industry resources and lobbyists and by monitoring legislative schedules at local, state, and federal levels. We ensure we buy quality products from reputable sources and maintain thorough records.
The Role of Customer Feedback
SBS – What role does customer feedback play in your business decisions?
Justin – Customer feedback is crucial, especially regarding products they don’t intend to purchase again or if they have negative experiences. While we consider opinions and requests, they do not always drive our inventory investments.
Creating a Vintage Aesthetic
SBS – Can you discuss the importance of creating a vintage aesthetic for your brand?
Justin – Our vintage aesthetic differentiates our brand and defines our style of service and atmosphere. Customers love our nostalgic vibe and old-school customer service, which keeps them returning.
Marketing Strategies and Customer Attraction
SBS – How do you market your business and attract new customers?
Justin – Marketing in our industry is challenging due to regulatory restrictions on advertising. Creativity and repetition are key. We use social media, local print media, radio ads, events, flags, sign spinners, and coasters with our logo in local bars and eateries. There is no single answer for effective advertising, so we continually explore new methods.

SBS – What advice would you give to new entrepreneurs entering the vape or CBD industry?
Justin – Thoroughly research and plan your business, considering regulations and their costs. Choose your location wisely, differentiate your business, and hire good staff.

SBS – How do you see the future of the vape industry, and what plans do you have for Vintage Vapor Texas?
Justin – As an optimist, I hope our products will remain available for our current and future clients. I also hope to see expansion in the hemp industry, especially in Texas. For Vintage Vapor Texas, we plan to continue serving Central Texas by helping those who want to lead healthier lifestyles through our legal and effective products.
